Scoring and testing work together. A good GEO Score is 80 or above, and the rules behind every point are on the GEO Score page and in the methodology. A score is not a guarantee of citation, so check whether ChatGPT cites your website as well.

What are the GEO Score bands?

The GEO Score bands split GeoTest's 0 to 100 scale into six grades, from A (Excellent) down to F (Critical). The same bands appear on every report, for a single page or a whole site, and on the public benchmark.

ScoreGradeBand
90–100AExcellent
80–89BGood
65–79CFair
50–64DModerate
35–49EPoor
0–34FCritical

The figures in the short answer come from data in The GeoTest Benchmark Report 2026, which scored 4,999 sites, all of them US business homepages, each scanned once between 11 and 13 October 2026 with the GEO v6 page score. The typical homepage in that report sits at the top of the Poor band, so a score in the 80s already puts a page ahead of most of the sites it competes with for a citation.

What does a GEO Score measure?

A GEO Score measures readiness: how much of what AI engines quote is actually on your page, and whether they can read it. A GEO Score is a 0 to 100 rating built from six weighted categories, and coverage is the share of the expected evidence a scan could actually evaluate, and the GeoTest FAQ states it plainly: "A GEO Score is a 0–100 rating of how well your website is understood and cited by AI answer engines." The same answer adds a caution that matters: "It is not a guarantee of citation; the live AI citation test shows whether engines actually cite you." A scan that could not evaluate at least 75% of the expected evidence shows "Insufficient coverage" instead of a grade, so a low number is never a guess.

Why do most websites score below 50?

Most websites score below 50 because they were written to rank and to persuade, not to be quoted. An answer-first section is a section whose first sentence states the answer to its heading, and most pages have few of them. The benchmark report found that Answer Structure earned 31.1% of its points and Citation Worthiness 26.6% across the 4,999 homepages: few sections open with the answer, and few facts name a source. The research behind GEO points the same way. The 2023 GEO study by Aggarwal et al. found that adding sources, statistics and quotations to a page raised its visibility in AI answers, with a 40% lift at the top end, and clicks now depend on that visibility: Pew Research Center data from 2025 shows searchers clicked a result in 8% of visits when an AI summary appeared, against 15% without one.

What GEO Score do websites built with AI app builders get?

Websites built with AI app builders get lower GEO Scores than most: in the GeoTest Benchmark Report 2026, the 331 sites built on AI app builders had a median of 36, against 53 for sites on Webflow, Wix, Squarespace and Framer. On 88.8% of the Lovable sites the main text needed JavaScript to appear, and AI crawlers do not run it: a Vercel analysis of 569 million GPTBot requests in 2024 found no sign that they execute JavaScript. Google's JavaScript guide says "Google Search runs JavaScript with an evergreen version of Chromium", but the crawlers behind ChatGPT and Claude read the raw HTML only.

Does a longer page get a higher GEO Score?

A longer page does not get a higher GEO Score for its length, because the rubric gives no points for word count. Longer homepages did score higher in the benchmark, a median of 56 above 1,500 words against 38 under 300, but only because they carried more of what is scored: answer-first sections, specific facts and a visible Q&A block. Only 7.9% of the 4,999 homepages scored 65 or more, and 2.5% reached 70. Thin pages are capped: an article with under 150 words of body text cannot score above 40.

How often should you rescan a page for its GEO Score?

A page should be rescanned for its GEO Score after every change and at least every 3 months, because the Freshness category rewards recent updates. An article updated within 3 months earns all 5 recency points, within 6 months 3 and within 12 months 1, and its schema dateModified must match a date shown on the page within 7 days for the 2 date-agreement points. Paid GeoTest plans include Site Analyses every month: 2 on Solo, 6 on Growth and 10 on Pro.

Is a good GEO Score the same as being cited?

A good GEO Score is not the same as being cited: the score measures readiness, and only a live citation test shows whether engines actually name you. The gap matters because the answer is now often the whole visit. An ALM Corp analysis reports that 83% of searches end without a click when AI Overviews appear, and 93% in AI Mode, and G2 research from 2026 found that 71% of B2B software buyers rely on AI chatbots for software research. As the authors of the GEO study wrote, "content creators have little to no control over when and how their content is displayed."

How do you raise a GEO Score?

You raise a GEO Score fastest by fixing its two heaviest categories first, Citation Worthiness (34 points) and Answer Structure (22 points). Citation Worthiness rewards sourced facts, attributed quotations, comparison tables and quotable definitions. Answer Structure rewards sections that open with the answer, a real heading hierarchy and Q&A blocks backed by FAQPage schema. Structured Data adds 12 more, and Google's structured data guide explains the markup it checks. A few hard limits override the total, such as a noindex tag (capped at 30) or a body under 150 words on a content page (capped at 40). The GEO Score page lists every check, weight and cap, and a free Quick Scan of one page takes about 15 seconds.
