GeoTest — The definitive guide
What is Generative Engine Optimization?
Definition
Generative Engine Optimization (GEO) is the practice of structuring a website so that generative AI engines can read, trust, and cite its content inside their answers. GEO is to AI answers what SEO is to blue-link search results.
Where traditional SEO optimizes for keyword rankings and backlinks, GEO optimizes for schema completeness, factual density, definition clarity, and live citation rates inside large language models.
51% of B2B software buyers now start their research with an AI chatbot more often than with Google, up from 36% seven months earlier (G2, 2026 AI Search Insight Report, based on a March 2026 survey of 1,076 B2B software buyers). If your site isn't structured for AI consumption, you are invisible to that traffic — no matter how well it ranks on traditional search.
SEO vs GEO: two channels, two disciplines
GEO doesn't replace SEO — it covers the channel SEO can't see.
| Traditional SEO | GEO |
|---|---|
| Optimizes for blue-link rankings | Optimizes for inclusion inside AI answers |
| Keywords, backlinks, SERP positions | Schema completeness, factual density, definition clarity |
| Measured in rank and organic clicks | Measured in live citation rates (ChatGPT, Perplexity) |

The signals AI engines reward
- Factual density. Concrete statistics, dates, and dollar amounts. AI engines preferentially cite content with verifiable numbers.
- Quotable definitions. Clear "X is Y" statements and comparison tables that an engine can lift directly into an answer.
- Complete schema. Organization, WebSite, Article, Breadcrumb and FAQPage JSON-LD so engines can trust who is speaking.

How AI engines actually decide what to cite
- They quote sentences, not pages. An engine lifts one or two sentences into its answer. If your key claim is buried in a 90-word paragraph, it never makes the cut.
- Numbers beat adjectives. "Fast shipping" gets ignored. "Ships in 2 business days, 98.4% on time" gets cited.
- They check who's talking. Author bylines, an About page, a founding date, a real address. Anonymous content gets treated like an anonymous tip.
- Schema is their native language. JSON-LD tells an engine what your page is without guessing.
- Long-form is the citation magnet. Engines disproportionately cite comprehensive 1,500+ word cornerstone pages.
- Freshness is a tiebreaker. A visible "Last updated" date with recent substance behind it edges out stale competitors when everything else is equal.
Myths, retired
- "We rank #1 on Google, so ChatGPT obviously knows us." Different game. Sites under 50 GEO are usually invisible to generative engines — regardless of their SEO authority.
- "GEO is just SEO with a new name." SEO earns rankings; GEO earns citations. Keywords and backlinks don't move an LLM. Factual density and schema do.
- "You can't measure AI visibility." You can — with live citation tests against Perplexity (sonar-pro).
- "It takes months to see anything move." Schema fixes show up in re-scans within 24 hours. Content improvements compound over 4–8 weeks as engines re-crawl.
- "Drop GEO keywords everywhere and you're set." Engines quote pages that answer questions cleanly. Stuffing never survives contact with a language model that read your whole page.
The 15-minute GEO starter checklist
- Add Organization + WebSite JSON-LD to your homepage <head>.
- Write one clean definition of what you do — a single "X is Y" sentence an engine can quote verbatim. Put it high on the page.
- Replace three adjectives with three numbers. Prices, dates, percentages, counts — anything verifiable.
- Add a visible FAQ (5+ questions) with FAQPage schema.
- Put bylines and a founding date on your About page.
- Check your robots.txt isn't blocking AI crawlers.
