GEO basics

GEO basics cover what Generative Engine Optimization is and how it differs from SEO and AEO.

  1. 01

What is the difference between GEO and AEO?

AEO (answer engine optimization) is the older name for getting your content picked as the single direct answer in featured snippets and voice assistants.
  2. 02

What is the difference between GEO and SEO?

SEO earns a position in a list of search results; GEO earns a citation inside an answer an AI engine writes.

Scores and measurement

Scores and measurement answers explain what a GEO Score means and how to check whether AI engines cite your site.

  1. 03

What is a good GEO Score?

A good GEO Score is 80 or above, and 90 or above is excellent, on GeoTest's 0 to 100 scale.
  2. 04

How do I check if ChatGPT cites my website?

You check whether ChatGPT cites your website by asking it your buyers' questions with search on, reading the sources listed with each answer, and checking your analytics for visits from chatgpt.com.
  3. 05

How is a GEO Score different from Domain Authority?

Domain Authority is Moz's 1 to 100 prediction of how likely a domain is to rank in Google, built mostly from its backlinks.

AI crawlers

AI crawlers are the bots AI engines send to read websites, and these answers cover which ones exist and what they can read.

  1. 06

Should I block GPTBot in robots.txt?

You can block GPTBot without losing ChatGPT search visibility, because GPTBot is OpenAI's training crawler and ChatGPT search uses a separate bot, OAI-SearchBot.
  2. 07

Can AI crawlers read JavaScript-rendered pages?

Mostly no. The crawlers behind ChatGPT, Claude and Perplexity fetch your HTML but do not run JavaScript, so text that only appears after scripts run is invisible to them.
  3. 08

Does llms.txt help you get cited by AI?

Not for AI search today. llms.txt is a proposed Markdown file that lists a site's key pages for language models, but Google says you don't need AI text files to appear in its AI features, and no major AI search engine documents it as a way to choose or cite sources.

Pages and markup

Pages and markup answers cover what to publish and which schema markup to add so AI engines can quote your pages.

  1. 09

Does schema markup help you get cited by ChatGPT?

Schema markup helps, but it does not get you cited on its own.
  2. 10

What pages does a website need to get cited by AI engines?

A website needs a clear About or Team page, contact and legal pages, and clusters of three or more substantive pages on each topic it wants to be cited for, linked to each other from the body copy.
