How is ranking in search different from being cited by AI?
Ranking in search puts your page in a list of links, while being cited by AI puts a passage from your page inside the answer itself. Search engine optimization is the practice of earning a high position in that list; generative engine optimization is the practice of earning a citation in the answer. The difference matters because answers absorb clicks: a Pew Research Center study of 900 people in the US, run in 2025, found that users who saw a Google AI summary clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits, against 15% without one, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1% of visits.
| SEO | GEO | |
|---|---|---|
| Goal | A high position in search results | A citation inside an AI answer |
| Unit that wins | The page | The passage: a few sentences that answer one question |
| Main signals | Relevance, links, page experience | Quotable facts, answer-first structure, matching schema, readable HTML |
| Measured by | Rank tracking, clicks, impressions | Citation rate across real prompts, GEO Score |
What does GEO add on top of SEO?
GEO adds four things on top of SEO, all aimed at making single passages easy for an AI engine to lift and trust. Citation Worthiness is the GeoTest category that measures how liftable a page's facts are, and it carries the most weight.
- Passages that stand alone. Each section opens with the answer, so an engine can quote two sentences without the rest of the page.
- Sourced facts. Numbers, dates and named sources give an engine something worth quoting. Citation Worthiness is the heaviest category in the GeoTest rubric at 34 of 100 points, and the 2023 GEO study found that rewriting pages this way can lift visibility by up to 40%.
- Schema that agrees with the page. JSON-LD earns points only when it matches the visible text.
- AI search crawlers allowed. According to OpenAI's crawler documentation, "OAI-SearchBot is used to surface websites in search results in ChatGPT's search features." Perplexity says in its bot documentation that "PerplexityBot is designed to surface and link websites in search results on Perplexity."
Do you still need SEO if you do GEO?
You still need SEO if you do GEO, because Google's AI features are built on the same index as Google Search. Google's guidance on AI features states that "To be eligible to be shown as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed", and that "The best practices for SEO remain relevant for AI features in Google Search (such as AI Overviews and AI Mode)." GeoTest reflects this: if Googlebot or Bingbot is blocked site-wide, the whole score is capped at 30, because a page that search cannot reach rarely reaches an AI answer either.
How much search traffic is moving to AI answers?
Search traffic is moving to AI answers fast enough to show up in publisher data. Similarweb data shows zero-click searches rose from 56% to 69% between May 2024 and May 2025. AdExchanger reported in 2026 that publishers with fewer than 10,000 daily pageviews have absorbed a 60% decline in Google search referrals, and that mid-sized publishers are down 47%. SEO still decides which pages get found; GEO decides which of them get named in the answer.
Does a high Google ranking guarantee an AI citation?
A high Google ranking does not guarantee an AI citation, because an engine quotes passages, not positions. The GEO study published in 2023 found that adding sources, statistics and quotations raised a page's visibility in AI answers, with a 40% lift at the top end, and its authors report that pages ranked lower in search results gained more than top-ranked ones. Ranking gets a page into the pool an engine reads; what the page says decides whether it is quoted.
How long do GEO changes take to show up?
GEO changes show up in a rescan straight away and in AI answers only after the engines crawl the page again. A free Quick Scan rescores a page in about 15 seconds, so you can confirm a fix the same day. Crawler changes take longer: OpenAI notes that "For search results, please note it can take ~24 hours from a site’s robots.txt update for our systems to adjust." Citations move only after the engines re-read the page, so rerun the same question panel before you judge a fix.
Which AI crawlers should an SEO team allow?
An SEO team should allow the five search-indexing crawlers GeoTest scores: Googlebot, Bingbot, OAI-SearchBot, PerplexityBot and Claude-SearchBot. Anthropic's crawler help article says "Claude-SearchBot navigates the web to improve search result quality for users." These bots read a lot of the web: in 2024 a Vercel analysis counted 569 million GPTBot requests and 370 million from Anthropic's crawler in one month. Blocking two or more AI search crawlers caps a GeoTest site score at 70.
Which tools measure SEO and which measure GEO?
SEO tools measure rankings, links and traffic, while GEO tools measure whether a page can be cited and whether it actually is. Moz, for example, says its Domain Authority score "predicts how likely a website is to rank on search engine results pages (SERPs) compared to competitors" (Moz). A GEO Score instead measures the page against a published 100-point rubric, and a citation test asks real engines real questions. GeoTest vs Semrush vs Ahrefs explains when each one fits.
