GeoTest vs Semrush vs Ahrefs: when to use each

Jason Gordon · 2026-05-20 · 11 min read · Updated 2026-09-10

Semrush and Ahrefs are SEO platforms that have added AI visibility tracking. GeoTest is a GEO scoring tool that audits whether your pages can be read and cited in the first place. These answer different questions, and the honest recommendation for most teams is not "pick one."

This is a comparison written by the people who build one of the three, so treat the framing as interested and the facts as checkable. Every capability claim below links to the vendor's own page.

Semrush

Semrush's AI visibility features are positioned around brand presence in AI answers: tracking how often ChatGPT, AI Overviews and other systems mention your brand, benchmarking competitors, finding prompt gaps, and following sentiment and narrative, per its own AI visibility feature page and AI visibility solution page.

Where it fits: teams already running Semrush for keywords, rank tracking and site audits who want AI presence in the same dashboard as everything else, and who need competitor benchmarking to justify budget.

Where it stops: knowing your share of voice is 4% does not tell you that your service pages return an empty shell to a crawler. Diagnosis at brand level rarely produces the specific page-level change.

Ahrefs

Ahrefs' Brand Radar tracks any brand's visibility across AI answers, YouTube and Reddit, with both custom prompts and an AI Visibility Index. Ahrefs' own help documentation describes it as monitoring brand visibility across a very large set of search-backed prompts modelled on real keywords.

Where it fits: competitive research. Being able to point Brand Radar at a competitor and see their AI presence is genuinely useful, and Ahrefs' index scale is the strongest argument for it.

Where it stops: same boundary as Semrush. It is a measurement instrument for outcomes, not an audit of the pages producing them.

GeoTest

GeoTest fetches your pages the way an AI crawler does, including the raw server response, and scores six weighted categories out of 100: content quality and depth (25), citation worthiness (20), structured data (18), authority signals (17), FAQ and Q&A format (12), and crawler accessibility (8). The rubric is published in full on the methodology page, the same version is used for every site, and a free quick scan needs no signup.

Where it fits: when you need to know what to change. The output is a ranked list of page-level fixes, a projected score if you make them, and a re-test to prove the fix landed.

Where it stops: GeoTest is not a keyword research platform, a backlink index, or a rank tracker, and it does not track millions of prompts. If you need those, you need one of the suites.

The decision, in four cases

  1. You want to know whether AI can read your site at all. Start with a GEO audit. This is the failure that browser-based tools structurally miss, and it invalidates everything else.
  2. You need to report AI share of voice to a board. Buy a suite. Brand-level trend data across many prompts is exactly what Semrush and Ahrefs built.
  3. You do classic SEO and want AI coverage in one place. Add the AI module to whichever suite you already pay for. Two overlapping suites is waste.
  4. You are an agency fixing client sites. Use both: the suite to show the client where they stand, the audit to produce the work order and prove the change.

What none of these tools can do

No tool has visibility into how a model chooses its sources. Everything available, ours included, is inference from two things: what engines output, and what pages contain. Anyone claiming a direct line into ChatGPT's ranking is selling you something.

Second caveat: AI answers vary between runs. The same prompt asked twice can cite different sources. Any single measurement, from any vendor, is a sample. Trends over weeks are meaningful; a single reading is not.

Pricing shape, not a price table

We do not publish other vendors' prices here, because they change and a stale table is worse than none. The structural difference is this: the SEO suites are per-seat monthly subscriptions covering a broad platform, with AI visibility as a module. GeoTest starts free for a quick scan and charges per site analysis or per plan for ongoing monitoring. Check each vendor's own pricing page before you budget.

Start with the audit, then decide what else you need.

A free GeoTest quick scan takes about a minute, needs no signup, and tells you whether AI systems can read your pages at all.

Frequently asked questions

Do I still need Semrush or Ahrefs if I use GeoTest?

Most likely yes, if you do classic SEO. Semrush and Ahrefs are large platforms covering keywords, backlinks, rank tracking and site audits, and both now also track how brands appear in AI answers. GeoTest does one narrow job: scoring whether your specific pages can be read, understood and cited by AI systems, and telling you what to change.

What is the difference between brand visibility tracking and GEO scoring?

Brand visibility tracking measures the outcome: how often an engine mentions you across a set of prompts. GEO scoring measures the cause: whether the page a model would need to read is accessible, specific, structured and attributable. The first tells you where you stand; the second tells you what to fix.

Does GeoTest track my share of voice in ChatGPT?

GeoTest runs live AI visibility prompts against real engines to see whether your site is cited for category questions, alongside the page-level GEO Score. It is not a large-scale share-of-voice platform with millions of tracked prompts; that is what the big suites are building.

Which tool should a small local business start with?

Start with the page-level problems, because a local site usually has them: content that only exists after JavaScript runs, no schema, no prices, no named owner. A free GEO scan surfaces those in minutes. Brand tracking is worth paying for once the pages themselves are fixed.

Can these tools see inside ChatGPT's ranking?

None of them can. Every tool in this space, including ours, works by observing outputs and inspecting pages. Be sceptical of any product claiming inside knowledge of how a model chooses sources.
