Answer Structure is where 4,999 websites lose the most GEO points.

Answer Structure is where websites lose the most GEO points. Across 4,999 business homepages in the GeoTest Benchmark (13 October 2026), sites earned just 31% of the Answer Structure points available. They earned 90% on Extractability. AI can read these pages. The pages just don't answer anything.

Key facts:

  • Answer Structure is worth 22 of 100 points in GeoTest's GEO Scoring Engine v6, live since 4 October 2026.
  • Homepages averaged 5.2 of 16.9 available Answer Structure points (31%), the lowest share of any category except Citation Worthiness (27%).
  • Extractability, by comparison, came in at 90%.
  • A GI Bill program page went from 27 to 88 out of 100 after an answer-first rewrite with schema.

What is Answer Structure in GEO?

Answer Structure is the GeoTest rubric category that measures whether a page answers questions in a shape AI engines can lift and quote. It's worth 22 of 100 points in the v6 rubric, second only to Citation Worthiness at 34.

It covers six things, all listed on the GeoTest methodology page:

  • Answer-first sections. Each section opens with the answer, not a warm-up.
  • Heading hierarchy. One H1, then real H2s that split the page into topics.
  • A visible Q&A block. Questions and answers a reader can actually see.
  • Question depth. How many real questions the page answers.
  • FAQPage schema backed by visible text. Markup that matches what's on the page.
  • Self-contained passages. Sections that still make sense when lifted out alone.

An answer-first passage is a section whose first sentence directly answers the question in its heading, in a complete sentence that still makes sense if quoted on its own.

GEO, or Generative Engine Optimization, is structuring a website so AI answer engines can read, trust and cite it. Answer Structure is the part of GEO most sites have never thought about. More on what GEO is.

How big is the Answer Structure gap?

Answer Structure is the biggest gap of any category in the GeoTest Benchmark. On homepages, sites averaged 5.2 of 16.9 available points, or 31%.

Citation Worthiness27%

Citation Worthiness looks worse as a percentage, but on homepages it carries far fewer points. In raw points, Answer Structure leaves the most on the table: 11.7 points per homepage, on average. The two are linked anyway. A page that never answers a question rarely states a quotable fact either.

Why do AI engines quote answer-first passages?

AI engines quote answer-first passages because they retrieve and cite text at the passage level, and a passage that leads with the answer can be used without rewriting it.

Here's the mechanism. When someone asks ChatGPT, Perplexity or Google AI Overviews a question that needs current information, the system searches, fetches candidate pages and pulls the passages that answer the question into the model's context. The model writes its answer from those passages and attaches sources.

A paragraph that opens with "At XYZ, we believe every customer deserves the best" and gets to the point in sentence four is hard to use. A paragraph that opens with the answer is easy to use. Engines take the easy one.

The research points the same way. The GEO study by Aggarwal et al. (2023) tested content changes against generative engine responses and found that adding attributed quotations lifted visibility 41%. Structure and sourcing are things you control.

What does an answer-first rewrite look like?

An answer-first rewrite moves the answer to the first sentence and replaces adjectives with facts. Here's a generic service-page paragraph, the kind I see on thousands of small business sites. This is an illustrative example written for this article. The business and its numbers are made up.

Before:

Welcome to Example Heating & Air! For over two decades, our family-owned team has been proud to serve our community with top-quality HVAC services. We believe in honesty, integrity and going the extra mile for every customer. Whether you need a repair, a new installation or routine maintenance, our friendly technicians are here to help. Contact us today to learn more!

What's wrong with it: no question answered, no location, no time frame, nothing an engine can repeat. "Over two decades" is vague. "Top-quality" is a mood, not a fact.

After:

How fast can Example Heating & Air fix a broken furnace?

Example Heating & Air repairs most furnaces in Dayton, Ohio, on the same day you call. Its 14 licensed technicians cover a 25-mile radius around the city. The company has serviced more than 9,000 homes since it opened in 2003. The diagnostic visit is free when you go ahead with the repair.

What changed:

  • The heading is a real question a customer would ask an AI.
  • The first sentence answers it, with a place and a time frame.
  • Four facts replace four adjectives: same day, 14 technicians, 25-mile radius, 9,000 homes since 2003.
  • Every sentence stands alone. No "we", "this" or "as mentioned above" that depends on context.

Same business. Same services. One version gives an engine nothing. The other gives it a direct answer and four facts to quote.

What is the Answer Structure checklist?

The Answer Structure checklist is eight checks you can run on any important page in about ten minutes:

  1. One H1, and at least three H2s.
  2. Headings phrased as the questions people ask AI.
  3. The first sentence under each heading answers it directly, in a full sentence. No "In this section", "When it comes to" or "Let's dive in".
  4. Each section survives being lifted out alone.
  5. Short paragraphs, one idea each.
  6. At least one number or checkable fact per section.
  7. A visible FAQ with six to eight questions customers actually ask.
  8. FAQPage JSON-LD that matches the visible FAQ word for word.

Then publish and re-scan. Ticking a box in a dashboard doesn't move the score. A live page does.

How does the GeoTest AI rewriter fix Answer Structure?

The GeoTest AI article rewriter takes an existing article and rewrites it to GeoTest's standard: answer-first structure, facts, attributed sources, outbound citations, an FAQ and schema. It shows a before score and a projected score, so you see the expected lift before you publish.

It's included on every paid plan with a monthly allowance, with credit packs after that. On the top company plan, the GeoTest team does it for you: 4 of your existing articles rewritten every month, each with a before and projected score, confirmed by a re-scan after publishing. Details on the done-for-you page.

The projected score is exactly that, a projection. The real number comes from re-scanning the live page.

What happened when a GI Bill page was rewritten answer-first?

A GI Bill program page for a career-training school went from 27 to 88 out of 100 after an answer-first rewrite, a 61-point lift.

The work came in three parts: a teardown of what the page was missing, a rewrite that answered the questions a veteran actually asks up front, and JSON-LD schema to match. The page didn't need a redesign. It needed answers.

Note: the GI Bill page was scored before GEO Scoring Engine v6 went live on 4 October 2026. GeoTest does not compare scores across rubric versions.

Does answer-first writing hurt SEO?

No, answer-first writing does not hurt SEO, and it usually helps readers too, because people skim for the answer. GEO complements SEO. It doesn't replace it. Your keywords, links and technical setup still matter. Answer Structure just makes sure that when a person or a machine lands on the page, the answer is the first thing they find.

Frequently asked questions

What is Answer Structure in GEO?

Answer Structure is the GeoTest rubric category that measures whether a page answers questions in a shape AI engines can lift and quote. It covers answer-first sections, heading hierarchy, a visible Q&A block, question depth, FAQPage schema backed by visible text and self-contained passages.

How many points is Answer Structure worth in GeoTest?

Answer Structure is worth 22 of 100 points in GeoTest's GEO Scoring Engine v6, live since 4 October 2026. Only Citation Worthiness, at 34 points, carries more.

What is an answer-first paragraph?

An answer-first paragraph opens with a complete sentence that directly answers the question in its heading. The rest of the paragraph adds detail, so the first sentence can be quoted on its own without editing.

Why do websites score low on Answer Structure?

Most pages are written to persuade a visitor who has already arrived, not to answer a question someone asked an AI. In the GeoTest Benchmark (13 Oct 2026), 4,999 homepages earned only 31% of available Answer Structure points.

Does adding an FAQ improve my GEO Score?

Yes. A visible FAQ and FAQPage schema that matches the visible text both count inside Answer Structure. The score changes after you publish the FAQ and re-scan the page.
